Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

PCOS affects hormones, fertility, and overall wellbeing. Dr Morrow provides thorough assessment and a personalised management plan to balance hormones, support reproductive health, and reduce long-term risks.

Managing PCOS with clarity and care

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in women of reproductive age, characterized by increased levels of androgens (male-type hormones), irregular or absent periods, and sometimes polycystic ovaries. It affects between 8-13% of women.

Though the exact cause is unknown, the condition is linked to insulin resistance, genetics, and lifestyle factors. PCOS symptoms can be managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and emotional support, with treatments focusing on improving symptoms and reducing the risk of long-term health issues like type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Common symptoms include:

  • Irregular periods: Infrequent, absent, or heavy periods

  • Excess hair growth (hirsutism): On the face, chest, or other areas

  • Acne: Persistent acne, especially on the face, back, or chest

  • Infertility: Difficulty becoming pregnant due to irregular ovulation

  • Weight gain: Difficulty maintaining a healthy weight

  • Hair loss: Thinning or baldness on the head

  • Darkening skin: Patches of dark skin, often in the neck, armpits, and groin (acanthosis nigricans)

  • Mood changes: Stress, anxiety, or depression

Early diagnosis and management of PCOS are crucial because it can increase the risk of other long-term health conditions, such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. There are many different options for treatment of PCOS and Dr Morrow will work with you to tailor a treatment plan best suited to you and your individual needs. This may include understanding your cycle and what else can be done to achieve a regular cycle, management of androgen symptoms, creating long term health goals, and optimising and planning for fertility.
