Expert care for endometriosis
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrium) grows on the surface of other organs, outside the uterus. This occurs most commonly within the pelvis, and may include the ligaments supporting the uterus, on the ovaries, and on the bladder or bowels.
The misplaced tissue acts like normal endometrial tissue, thickening and bleeding with each period. But because it is trapped inside the body, it leads to adhesions that can join organs and cause inflammation, significant pain, heavy bleeding, scarring and infertility. In rare cases, it can also be found on the diaphragm or chest.
There are thought to be a number of probable causes including genetics, immune function, and environmental factors. Endometriosis is a condition that affects around one in ten women and it is a common cause of pelvic pain and infertility, although it is important to note that not everyone with endometriosis will experience pain or infertility. This is one reason why a formal diagnosis may often not take place for many years.
Common symptoms of endometriosis may include:
Feeling urgency and frequency to empty your bladder
Pain when emptying your bladder
Pain during or around your period
Very heavy and/ or irregular periods
Pain during or around ovulation
Pain during or after sex
Pain when moving your bowels
Pain in your pelvis, lower back or legs
The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and properly manage symptoms, as there is no cure for endometriosis. Where the condition is impacting fertility, it is important to seek professional guidance to help you optimise your fertility.
If you are experiencing these types of symptoms, Dr Morrow can help.
