Abnormal Cervical Screening(Colposcopy)
A colposcopy is a medical procedure where a doctor uses a colposcope (a magnifying instrument with a bright light), to closely examine the cervix for any abnormal cell changes that may require treatment.

Your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist after an abnormal cervical screening test, such as a Pap test or cervical screening, to determine if further investigation or treatment is needed for potential issues like human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.
A colposcopy is a medical procedure where a doctor uses a colposcope (a magnifying instrument with a bright light), to closely examine the cervix for any abnormal cell changes that may require treatment. It allows the doctor to observe a magnified view of the cervix, vagina and vulval area.
Other abnormalities that may lead to a referral for a colposcopy include inflammation, infection, pre-cancerous cells or cancer of the cervix. It is important to note that cancer is very rare and the majority of changes found at the time of colposcopy will resolve without any treatment at all and will require only follow-up checks. It is always best to follow through with a referral for a colposcopy to eliminate the possibility of a more serious diagnosis.
During the procedure, the cervix may be dabbed with a diluted vinegar solution to highlight abnormal areas, and a small tissue sample, called a biopsy, may be taken from these areas for further analysis. A speculum is used during the procedure to assist vision to the cervix.
The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes and you can usually resume your normal activities immediately after a colposcopy without a biopsy. If Dr Morrow takes a biopsy of an abnormal appearing area it is sent away to the laboratory for assessment.
Sometimes a biopsy will show pre-cancerous changes requiring further treatment to prevent a progression to cancer. The majority of patients simply return to their usual screening schedule following treatment and medical clearance.
