Understanding and treating fibroids
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in the uterus and are commonly experienced during the reproductive age. Ranging in size from very small to larger masses, uterine fibroids can be responsible for a range of symptoms, including:
Urinary frequency
Constipation
Pelvic pain and pressure
Heavy menstrual bleeding
Backache or leg pain
Uterine fibroids can also be a cause of infertility, and can create complications during pregnancy. This can include obstetric complications, preterm labour, or repeated miscarriages.
There are a number of treatment options available for uterine fibroids:
Medications: This includes hormonal or non-hormonal medications which can be used to help both manage the symptoms, and decrease the size of the fibroids
Myomectomy: This is the surgical removal of uterine fibroids, whilst preserving the uterus
Uterine artery embolization (UAE): This is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks blood flow to uterine fibroids by injecting tiny particles into the uterine arteries. This causes growths to shrink and die
Hysterectomy: This is a surgery that removes the uterus (womb), and often includes the cervix, and sometimes the fallopian tubes and ovaries. This approach may be used when other treatment options are not effective
Dr Morrow can guide you through the process of choosing the best treatment option for your diagnosis and circumstances.
