Support for irregular or heavy periods

Menstrual abnormalities are changes in the pattern, timing, or amount of menstrual pain and bleeding that deviate from what is considered normal.

Some of the most common menstrual abnormalities include:

  • Menorrhagia: This is bleeding that is much heavier or lasts longer than usual (often more than 7 to 8 days)

  • Hypomenorrhea: Periods that are very light or last less than 2 days

  • Intermenstrual Bleeding: When spotting or bleeding occurs between menstrual cycles

  • Oligomenorrhea: This is when periods occur more than 35 days apart, or have significant variations in cycle length from one cycle to the next

  • Dysmenorrhea: This condition can cause severe cramping, pain, nausea, or vomiting during menstruation

  • Polymenorrhea: This is frequent menstrual bleeding that occurs when a menstrual cycle is shorter than 21 days

  • Amenorrhea: This is a complete absence of menstruation, which can be primary (never started) or secondary (a change from previous normal periods). Amenorrhea can occur due to pregnancy, menopause, or certain medical conditions including eating disorders

  • Postmenopausal Bleeding: This describes any vaginal bleeding after menopause. It is considered an abnormality and requires investigation

Menstrual abnormalities can be extremely debilitating and cause significant disruption to your life. It is important that if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you seek professional advice.

Treatment options depend on the underlying cause and can range from stress management and lifestyle changes, to the use of medications (including hormonal or non-hormonal options), to surgery.
